Organization’s Background/Capacity

Since MPEG’s inception six years ago and registration with the ministry of social services, Minority Persons Empowerment group is an MSM/MSW led organisation advocating for human Rights, promoting positive health, providing security interventions to the MSM/MSW community and advancing their social and economic development in Kiambu county, Kenya. We design, plan and implement programs aimed at creating a less hostile environment for grassroots MSM/MSW individuals. Our programs encourage MSM/MSW individuals to accept themselves and are spearheaded towards empowering the same  people in areas of human rights, social, sexual and reproductive health and self-determined economic lifestyles.

MPEG has a governing structure that follow policy briefs , organisational structure and follows all the guideline of a community based organisation. We have Very qualified personnel. We have four volunteer staff. The Director who is a qualified administrator from Kenya institute of Management and a holder of Information technology Diploma. He is also a trained HIV counsellor. A writer and a consultant. The programs officer is a qualified Program manager, was a student at Railways Training institute, accounting and business administration and pursuing a degree in business management also from Mount Kenya University. Our finance officer was a student of Kenya institute of management qualified CPA holder. Our Office administrator is qualified and certified from Kenya Institute of Management in project management.

Statement of Purpose

MPEG being situated in a conservative and homophobic environment due to Kikuyu culture, existence of illegal gang (Mungiki ), the fact of a political member of parliament who is a mover of Anti-homosexuality bill hails from this region and the rising police brutality which is associated with community assaults and violence. There is need to mobilize, sensitize, empower, and create awareness to  the MSM/MSW community in this region bearing in mind there is much need of doing the same to the larger community, law enforcers, policy makers, health service providers and the religious caucus.

Vision and Mission

  • To Advocate for MSMs on sexual reproductive health  well being , psycho-social and economic empowerment.
  • To provide information, education and  awareness for MSMs wellbeing and sexual reproductive health rights

According to the latest National Aids Control Council recent publication of the Kenya HIV County Profiling published 2014 under the ministry of health, HIV prevalence in Kiambu county is at 3.8% Ranking No. 17 with the number of adults living with HIV as at 42,000.Other cition under the Kenya demographic and health survey and Kenya Aids Indicators survey conducted proves the epidermic.this is according to KDHS and KAIS dataThis also shows that annually there is 2,931 new infection of Sexual transmitted infection in the county.Annually there is 2,931 new looming cases of Sexually transmitted infection This has been caused by the rapid sexual intercourse at very low age.55% of sexual intercourse in the county happens before the age of 15yrs according to the IBBS survey.

Although there has been progress in increasing access to services for MSMs, stigma and discrimination remains a major obstacle to successful scale up of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services , including antiretroviral therapy (ART). At present, condom use among MSMs is estimated at 42%  while HTS coverage is estimated to be about 75% and about 63% of HIV-infected MSM are unaware of their HIV status.according to MPEG data collected within the 5 years Similarly, though based on limited data, ART uptake among MSMs diagnosed with HIV is low , which indicates that there is low linkage rate and adherence support among MSM diagnosed with HIV.

HIV related services targeting MSM/MSW are poorly resourced and operate under outdated policies. In addition,  criminalization of MSMs is a barrier to effective programming.
